Christmases have a habit of following a fairly regular pattern with the Nelson Handbell Ringers and in common with other groups and individuals we say, ‘This year it will be different’. Well we had the usual last minute requests to play – because people think about bells at Christmas time. We played for the elderly, we played for the young. We said, ‘Let’s leave that piece out for the time being and practise it up for next year.’ And so it went on.
But one thing made this year really different. We were asked to play on Radio Derby on Christmas Eve. We assembled at 7 am and there we were – live on air with our rendition of ‘Joy to the World’. So we reached out to more than our usual local groups this year and to top it all we had bacon butties together for breakfast.
Maybe next year will be different, but it won’t be better. And in the meantime we are adding to our varied repertoire for the rest of the year.
Well the ringing is over for another Christmas period. It came and went so quickly in the end, but we were pleased to play at a variety of new venues this year.
We paid two visits to the Royal Oak in Ockbrook, firstly for the switch-on of the Christmas Lights, and secondly to entertain the senior citizens of Bramblebrook Link at their Christmas Lunch.
Treetops Hospice welcomed us to play along at their lively Christmas Shopping Event.
We visited Briar Close Residential home locally and Ashfields in Heanor. at each encountering choirs of which Gareth Malone would have been proud.
And lastly, we were thrilled to be part of the Christingle Service at Ockbrook Moravian Church on Christmas Eve. Seeing the children with their candles in the darkened church and singing the Moravian carol seemed to be both truly magical and deeply spiritual and we hope that we enhanced the service in a modest way.
We will start 2016 by having lunch together, probably looking back over the Christmas period, but also making plans for our new programme.
Apologies for plagiarism, but….
……Handbells are for Life not just for Christmas.

It’s that time of year when someone in the team says:”Isn’t it time we got the Christmas folders out?”. Well we are obviously well into autumn and we can’t put it off much longer, so this is the week when we start. We’ll dust off our old favourites and practise again some of the music hand-written for us by our predecessors but also plan to extend our seasonal repertoire.
We are pleased to have been invited again by Ockbrook Parish Council to play outside the Royal Oak for the switch on of the Christmas Lights. This will take place on Friday 20th November at 7.00 pm. We have had great fun at this event in past years.

Well we made it! And so did more loyal supporters than we had dared to hope for . It was great to be part of the Great Bellringing Event, welcoming in London 2012. OK we weren’t up there with the Red Arrows but we felt that we had done our bit. And mentioning legacy, as they do, maybe we can hope that one or two of those who turned up at 8.12 this morning will come and have a go with us again.
